Prior to the 1800’s selling things was easy. You would take your wares to market and shout how good they were or you’d have a board with prices up. As the Industrial revolution came and the British Empire grew more and more people found that they had more disposable income in their pockets. Conversely the new wealth in the country meant that more could be produced.

The competition to sell these products was fierce. Billboards and strategically placed metal signs, were the most popular choice of mass advertising. However, the growth of print media was also relevant. The population was becoming increasingly literate and the cheaper Newspapers, the penny dreadfuls, relied on selling advertising space along with the purchase price to survive.
