For anyone who has ever decided to build their own home, they will tell you that finding a plot of land is one of the most challenging parts of the process – and that is before you have started the build!
If you have decided to embark on the self-build journey, here are a few tips if you are just starting out on how to find the perfect plot…
Lower your Expectations – Land in the UK is very expensive in some parts, especially the south of England, and land is in high demand. So, it is a good idea to have a list of what you are looking for and to see what you would be willing to compromise in order to purchase a plot.
Use Maps – Using maps of the local area that you wish to buy your plot in is a great idea – maps such as planning maps (you can find a planning map at the map shop) are a very good way to get an idea of where you may be able to build.
Be Proactive and Think Outside the Box – Plots of land will probably not just fall in your lap unless you are very lucky, so you need to get out there and find them. Often, people buy land simply by asking around – do you know a local farmer who has some land that may be perfect for you? Approach them and ask – the worst they can do is say no, and you may end up with a perfect plot for your new home!
