What forms of trauma are there?

Trauma is a word that is used in a very common occurrence. You will see it on regular occasions in medical reports and also in general reporting. However, it does break down into three succinct definitions. These are all considered to be of an equal importance in terms of the trauma that they cause.   1. Acute trauma. This trauma is defined by one event. This can be in a variety of forms. Examples include a road traffic accident, being involved in a natural disaster, or a random act of violence against oneself. Apart from the obvious physical injuries this can cause there are also emotional side effects. Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and PTSD are also common.
  1. Chronic trauma. When someone is exposed to a series of events that are traumatic this can also have the same effects. While there may not be physical damage there is a case of long-term mental health injury. This can be as a result of neglect, abuse, or being in and around a traumatic event on a regular basis.

  1. A complex trauma is where a person is involved in a series of traumatic happenings. This can be over a long and protracted period. Examples of this are abusive homes, exposed to a dangerous environment, or being surrounded by and subject to substance abuse. This can result in long-term issues such as behavioural problems and will affect the person’s ability to develop attachments.
