Fashioning old clothing into new objects is an eco-conscious way to craft. In fact, some of the most well-known fashion designers and labels in 2023, such as Reformation and the designer Stella McCartney, have now integrated upcycling into their supply chain.
British Vogue has even said that upcycling materials is a ‘no brainer’. It’s also a great way to get into a new hobby. If you are new to macrame or knitting, then a crafting or macrame kit is the way to go, with specialists such as www.woolcouturecompany.com/collections/macrame-kits supplying everything you need to begin, including instructions.
Creating T-shirt yarn is a great way to upcycle old T-shirts lying around the house. And it’s easy to do. You just need an old T-shirt and a pair of scissors.
Step one
Lay the T-shirt out on a flat surface and cut below the arm holes, then cut off the bottom hem. You can use the top as a house duster!
Step Two
Fold the shirt on its side, with the open edges facing the top and bottom of the table, and the joined sides that still have seams facing the sides. Cut the shirt into one-inch strips starting on the right side, being careful to preserve a one-inch fold on the joined side that holds the material together.
Then do the other side, cutting between the first set of cuts, again preserving a one-inch section on the left side. Now you will have something resembling a fabric slinky toy.
Step three
Cut from the end of one slit to the start of another, working diagonally across the uncut inch spaces. Snip the loop so it straightens out into a continuous piece of yarn. Then roll the yarn into a ball, and you are done.
