Should You Insulate Your Loft?

If you have a loft space, you may have heard that you should insulate it. This is not strictly true, as most lofts are already insulated, though it is often inadequate and squashed together. You may also have a loft floor insulation of just 25mm, in which case you can just add recommended loft floor insulation over this. However, this will not provide airtight protection for your loft, and you may experience condensation and mould.

To calculate the amount of insulation that you should install in your loft, you should measure the width and depth of the floor above the loft. In general, the width of the floor is between 380 and 570mm. You can use an old hand saw to measure the gaps, and then add them together. Then, lay the second layer of insulation over the joists, covering the top 100mm. Lastly, make sure to nest the insulation around the loft caps. If you’re looking for professional installers to insulate your loft, you can check out the National Insulation Association website. NIA members will follow its code of professional practice. Loft insulation should be at least 270mm deep according to current government recommendations, as this will ensure that it allows adequate ventilation. Insulating your loft too thickly may trap moisture and encourage mould. Therefore, the best way to make sure your loft is well-insulated is to hire a specialist insulation contractor.
