Back pain is very uncomfortable, especially when it is continuous and hard to relieve. Many of us spend long periods of the day sat down, which when not accompanied by regular stretching and exercises, can cause chronic pain and tension. If your back pain is affecting your daily activities, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor, but if you’d prefer to try private physiotherapy, I recommend Clinikind, for physio Monmouth. In the meantime, here are a few tips for relieving back pain.

  1. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees to keep your spine in neutral position. Back pain can make sleeping hard, but it becomes a vicious cycle when the way we sleep can also make our back pain worse, and tiredness can aggravate bodily pain. Sleeping on your side as I said or sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees is a good way to keep your back in a comfortable position.
  2. Correct your posture. Sitting and standing with a good posture really makes a difference when it comes to how much tension or pain we have in our body. It’s important to keep our shoulders relaxed, and to not slouch. Standing or sitting in a way that supports the natural curve in our lower back will help prevent or relieve pain. When sitting, keep your feet flat on the floor, and let the chair support your back. You can put a pillow or rolled towel behind your lower back to keep the natural curve of your spine.

  1. Take pain relieving medicine. Obviously, you don’t want to become dependent on medication but until you start physiotherapy, it can help you get on with your daily activities.
  2. Lastly, exercise can really help, especially in the long term and for your overall health. Doctors used to prescribe bed rest for back pain but now we know that it is the worst thing for back problems. Exercises such as swimming, yoga and jogging are the best when it comes to preventing pain and tension in the body.

Hopefully these tips will help you relieve the pain in your back until you get professional help. Back pain is not easy to live with and is a sign that you are doing something wrong either with the way you move, sit or the lack of exercise in your life.
